Mud Dog Saltwater Flies is a small, home based business I operate around my "real" day job. The idea to start this business came to me one day while walking with my dog, Jack, along the bank of a local river. I had been fishing there earlier that morning and had been in to a pack of breaking schoolie stripers and watched in dismay as my fly exploded and disintegrated as fish hit it. Two more of the same pattern recently purchased from a large retailer did the same thing. Sitting there that afternoon I decided to start tying my own flies and build them so that they would not catch fish, but also endure repeated hook ups. Recalling similar tales from friends and anglers of flies that just did not hold up, I reckoned there might be a place in the tackle industry that produced a quality fly for a reasonable price that would last longer than one day of fishing. Looking up out of deep thought, I saw Jack standing in front of me covered in mud and the name of the business was born. Jack has been gone for a long time but he always has been, and always will be, the face of the business.
The flies on the menu board have been compiled from over two decades on the water. Born on the water and proven in the mud, each pattern has been fished by me and the guides I work with for a season before it gets added. If it doesn't catch, you won't see it. I'm not a fly designer. I'm a fly fisherman who ties flies. Everything is tied guide style, relatively simple, made to catch and built to last. It's all tied to be fished, not for follows, likes, staged photographs or internet videos. That's not fishing.
There is no staff here, just me. There is no brick and mortar store, just the online fly shop. All the flies are tied by me, nothing is outsourced. This means that sometimes there may be a delay in getting orders out but if something is needed immediately, I'll do my best to get it to you. I am always available either by email or phone to answer any questions or help in fly selection for a specific species, fishery or destination. If it's not a pattern I tie, I can usually point you to someone who does tie it. My favorite part of this business, and what makes the sleepless nights worth it, is getting a call or photo from customers and hearing the story behind a catch or a day on the water. So let me know how the flies work for you.
